An Apple ID is required for deploying apps to devices running iOS 8 or OS X 10.10 Yosemite. Jamf Now supports device-based Volume Purchase Program (VPP) app assignment for devices running iOS 9 or OS X 10.11 El Capitan.
Up until 2015, by Apple’s design, every Mac and iOS device has required that an Apple ID be signed in to download Apps and other media. Apple introduced this new VPP deployment method alongside the release of iOS 9 and OS X 10.11 El Capitan that can remove that Apple ID requirement.
VPP Apps assigned by Jamf Now can be reclaimed and assigned to someone else in the future, meaning that your organization will retain ownership of these valuable licenses over time. You have a lot of flexibility with allowing your users to sign in with their personal Apple IDs, company-owned Apple IDs, or removing Apple ID requirements altogether. If needed, you can create new Apple IDs for use on your enrolled devices without entering payment information (https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204034).
