For many years, Apple has allowed organizations to purchase and distribute apps in bulk. Once an app was purchased, Apple would give the user a spreadsheet with codes to be distributed manually or put into a management tool. Once this code was used, they were permanently redeemed. This would mean that the license could not be reused on another device and you would need to purchase more codes.
Starting with OS X 10.9 and iOS 7, Apple released Managed Distribution. Managed distribution gives more flexibility to administrators of your organization. You are now able to distribute and remove access to applications using a service like Jamf Now.
