The Apple Push Notifications service (APNs) certificate allows you to create a trusted relationship between your devices, Apple, and Jamf Now, and is an important step in setting up your Jamf Now account.
While you will not be forced to immediately set up APNs when you sign up for Jamf Now, you will want to consider setting it up fairly quickly as APNs is a prerequisite for issuing management commands.
Before beginning this tutorial, you'll want to verify that:
- You have a Jamf Now account and are able to sign in.
Please note: Have your Apple ID handy! If you don't have an Apple ID, you'll want to create one now. If you have an Apple ID but cannot remember it, click here to read more about recovering it.
Tutorial: Creating an APNs certificate
The following video is a step-by-step walkthrough of how to create an APNs certificate.
For help setting up APNs on a Windows machine, click here.
1. Begin by clicking APNs in the left-hand navigation menu
You will be taken to the first step in a four step process for generating your first APNs certificate.
2. Click Download Certificate Signing Request
This .plist file type is a unique file that you'll need to provide to Apple in the following step in order to generate your certificate. Click Next to proceed.
3. Click Open the Apple Push Certificates Portal
A new window will open and you will be asked to reauthenticate with the Apple ID and password that you used to originally generate the APNs certificate in question. After logging in, click Create a Certificate.
- If the process is successful, you will see a confirmation message with a green check mark. Click Download to grab a copy of your newly minted APNs certificate and head back to Jamf Now to complete setup. Click Next.
4. Upload your new APNs certificate
Either drag-and-drop your file into the dotted box or click Browse to find the new certificate on your computer. Can't find the new file? Check your downloads folder in case it defaulted there. Click Next.
5. Finally, consider saving your Apple ID
This final step is optional but we highly recommend taking advantage of the ability to save your Apple ID in Jamf Now if you don't use this particular Apple ID very often. It can save you a lot of headache down then road when it comes time to renew again.
Congratulations! Your APNs certificate is now set up and is valid for the next 12 months.
